A 16-YEAR-OLD boy was rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the neck in a vicious attack.
The youngster needed eight stitches to the wound, which is thought to have been inflicted with a sharp weapon, such as a broken bottle.
Police and paramedics raced to the scene in Auchmead Road, Greenock, in the early hours of Saturday morning after reports someone had been injured.
The teenager was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment after the attack, which happened at around 1am. He was later released from hospital.
Officers in Greenock are now treating the attack as a serious assault.
Investigations are continuing in a bid to trace the culprit responsible.
Speaking on behalf of the community this morning, local Councillor Ciano Rebecchi said, sadly, it was no surprise to hear the victim was a teenager.
He said: “Age is no barrier now to people using weapons or being the victims of attacks. Everyone who uses a weapon should get the same harsh treatment from the courts.
“Any type of weapon can take a life just the same.”
Councillor Rebecchi said many crimes involving weapons aren’t reported so it is hard for the authorities to keep track of statistics. And he warned any attack involving a weapon can be deadly.
He said: “It is simple - if someone uses a weapon, then they can kill. These people don’t think of the consequences.”
Anyone with any information can call the police on 492500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
