ATTACK: Joseph Cummings.

A GREENOCK man stabbed in the leg by a gang of armed thugs has died - eight days after the attack.

Joseph Cummings, below, passed away at Inverclyde Royal Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The 37-year-old was stabbed during a serious assault in which he and a 45-year-old man were hurt in Greenock’s Wren Road on Sunday 22 August. Joseph was treated at the IRH but later allowed home.

It’s understood the former soldier, from Mallard Crescent, right, then returned to hospital on Thursday complaining of breathlessness. He was admitted by medics and died five days later.

One neighbour told the Tele: “We heard he had died. It has come as a bit of a shock.

“He didn’t say much, but was normally pleasant enough and obliging if you needed anything.”

The older man suffered six stab wounds to his back, leg, stomach and head in the same brutal street attack.

He was rushed to the IRH’s high-dependency unit, where he remained for several days, but has now been released.

Police have been hunting a gang of weapon-wielding youths who pounced on the pair after they pulled up in a green Ford Fiesta near the shops in Wren Road around 8pm on the night of the attack.

They managed to escape and the yobs smashed up the motor before making off.

It’s understood the thugs may have been armed with machetes or swords.

Police have been examining a blood-spattered car as part of their enquiries.

DI John Dearie, of Greenock Police, said: “I can confirm a Mr Joseph Cummings has died and that a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal regarding that.

“The man was involved in a separate incident eight days previously. At this stage it is not being linked.”

Police are continuing to investigate the Wren Road attacks.
