THE Royal Bank of Scotland mortgage centre in Greenock has escaped devastating job cuts - and will in fact get MORE posts.
The banking giant yesterday revealed it will shed 3,500 workers across 12 offices in England, but has announced their Greenock contact centre is safe and set to grow.
Bosses at RBS are not yet able to comment on how many jobs could come to the town under the plan, but confirmed that the workforce - currently around 700-strong - will increase between now and 2012.
A spokeswoman for RBS said: “Greenock will be one of our centres for mortgage operations across the UK and will see an increase of jobs over the next two years.
“The fact we have retained Greenock as a consolidated site is testament to the quality of the workforce we have here.”
The bank’s Edinburgh centre also escaped yesterday’s cutbacks, which come as a result of efficiency savings having to be made, along with adjustments to the bank’s structure which the European Union has insisted upon.
A local politician who has been involved in high-level talks with RBS chiefs about the future of the Greenock site today expressed relief it will not be caught up in the drastic cuts.
Duncan McNeil, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, also praised the mortgage centre staff for the quality of their work and said it had proved a key factor in securing the site’s future.
Mr McNeil added: “While this is obviously devastating news for other places, we can take some comfort from the fact RBS in Greenock will continue to be a key site and no jobs will be lost locally.
“Having spoken with senior management at RBS yesterday morning, I know they are still committed to growing this site.
“That in itself is a credit to the loyal and hard-working staff who are based there.”
