GREENOCK is set for a fresh jobs boost after IBM unveiled a new apprenticeship scheme for school leavers.
For the first time, the technology giant is offering placements for young people who have just completed their secondary education.
The company has confirmed its Greenock base will be included in the new scheme, although it is not yet known how many of the 20 places will come here.
The two-year programme will create a new generation of IT specialists, and trainees will have the opportunity of a career with IBM when it finishes.
Jenny Taylor, IBM UK graduate and student programmes manager, said: “Working closely with e-Skills UK, we are looking to hire apprentices into our IT specialist profession.
“Specialists develop, design, build, test and implement systems to solve the business and IT problems of our clients.
“As an IT specialist, an apprentice will be a hands-on professional and will develop an in-depth understanding of IBM products, offerings and services.
“This is a great opportunity for IBM to attract young talent and a way for young people - who have decided not to go to university at the time they finish their Highers - to join a vibrant and forward-thinking organisation, which will help them progress and develop themselves for the duration of their employment with IBM.”
A local MSP has welcomed news of the scheme, which follows hot on the heels of employment boosts at Greenock’s RBS mortgage centre and the Hewlett Packard plant in nearby Erskine.
The SNP’s Stuart McMillan, pictured, said: “This is good news for Inverclyde and good news for IBM.
“This positive announcement for the industry comes on the back of the recent announcement by Hewlett Packard they are to create 700 jobs in Erskine.
“I look forward to hearing how many places will be made available by IBM for apprentices at their Greenock site.”
