AT WAR: Joe Pool in action in Afghanistan.

THE body of tragic Greenock soldier Joseph McFarlane Pool will be flown back to RAF Lyneham tomorrow.

The 26-year-old dad-of-two was killed in action during a grenade attack in Afghanistan on Sunday morning.

Today, an army spokesman confirmed his body would be brought back to the UK so arrangements can be made for his funeral.

Tributes have been pouring in for the soldier, known as Joe, and today his heartbroken fiancee, Lynsey Houston, shared her favourite pictures of him with Tele readers.

Joe captured the hearts of Tele readers when he launched a campaign to save abandoned pup Hera from the war-torn streets of Afghanistan.

He successfully helped raise £5,000 to bring the dog to Scotland, where she is currently in quarantine.

Today, former Provost Councillor Ciano Rebecchi paid tribute to Lance Corporal Pool, originally from Dumfries, and called on the UN to do more to stop further tragedies.

He said: “That’s the second local soldier we have lost and I hope it is the last. His family will be shattered and devastated and our thoughts are with them. We just hope it doesn’t happen to any one else. The sooner it stops the better.”

Meanwhile, the public continued to post tributes on the internet in memory of Lance Corporal Pool, who leaves behind Lynsey and their children, Jamie, two, and Lee, seven.

On Queen of the South’s unofficial website, a mourner said: “Everyone here at Queens Mad wish to convey our sincere condolences to Rod and Stella Pool on the loss of their son, Joseph, who was killed while doing his duty in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

“Rod is a well-known regular at Palmy along with his other son, Ryan.”

Another added: “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

A tribute was made on website www.friendsatrest.com inviting friends and colleagues to leave messages in memory of the local hero.

On one site a wellwisher wrote: “RIP. You were so brave to give your life for our country, I hope your family and friends can find comfort in what you have done, a great job for your country.”
