Ton are book stars
THE author of a new book featuring Morton has told how a trip to watch the Ton helped him fall back in love with football.
Middlesbrough FC fan Daniel Gray became so disillusioned with the 'big-time' game that he decided to go on a journey through the towns of Scotland's lower league clubs and write a travel book about his experiences.
He fell in love with Cappielow and Greenock when he visited earlier this year and researched the town and club's history.
The title of his book - Stramash - is also inspired by the famous term coined by Ton fan and commentating legend Arthur Montford, while its front cover, pictured, is an iconic photo taken outside Cappielow in 1995.
Dan said: "I did the book because I just couldn't relate to the football I was watching any more. I'd totally lost my love for it and Cappielow has helped me get that back - the architecture of the ground is brilliant.
"It's now become my favourite ground - because of things like the crane in the background, the wee glimpse you get of the park when you go by on the train, and the comments from the crowd.
"There's just something special about it."
As well as celebrating the club's origins and high points, the fascinating chapter about Greenock details its history, covering the Blitz to the background of the municipal buildings.
Dan said: "I didn't realise the town had such an incredible history. I also thought The Esplanade was a lovely place and enjoyed speaking to fans in the Norseman beside the ground - everyone was very friendly."
Dan was determined to use a scene outside Cappielow for the book front cover and now looks out for Morton's scores.
He said: "That photo is my favourite picture and it illustrates why Cappielow is special - I just hope Morton can get a bit more success there."
