Two-way traffic road chaos
CONFUSED drivers faced chaos this morning after Inverkip Street in Greenock was returned to two-way traffic for the first time in years.
Cars narrowly avoided each other during rush hour, above, as the new system left motorists baffled.
The A78 - which has been one-way for more than a decade - has undergone a £145,000 transformation by road bosses Amey.
Under the scheme, a bridge has been replaced, alterations have been made to South Street roundabout, Inverkip Street at Newton Street junction has been resurfaced, there has been kerbing realignment, signs have been changed and new road markings laid.
This morning, drivers appeared to struggle getting to grips with the new system, which came into place at midnight on Saturday.
The trunk road traffic in Greenock was diverted via a one-way system through the town for many years due to a railway bridge on Inverkip Street being unable to safely carry the increasing volumes of traffic.
A spokesperson for Amey said: "New road layout signs are clearly visible on every approach to the new two-way system. We urge drivers to look out for the robust signage in place in the area as well as the new road markings designed to guide them safely through Greenock."
