Exams hit by school blaze
PUPILS are being forced to sit vital prelim exams in a church hall today while their school remains closed following a fire.
Notre Dame High in Greenock is expected to remain shut until tomorrow after a blaze at a fuse box on Monday caused a power surge, leaving the school without power.
The extended closure now means fifth and sixth-year pupils will have to sit their maths Higher and Advanced Higher prelim exams in St Joseph's Parish Church Hall this morning.
Council bosses have apologised for the disruption and admitted more exams have been rescheduled to another date.
A spokesman for the local authority added: "Arrangements have been made for S5/S6 pupils to sit their maths Higher and Advanced Higher prelim exams at St Joseph's Parish Church Hall, Bow Road, Greenock, today at 9am.
"Planned prelims for maths Intermediate One and Two, administration and music will be rescheduled to another date.
"Every effort is being made to re-open the school as quickly as possible with the minimum disruption to pupils, parents and staff, and as such the situation is being constantly monitored."
Education chiefs have laid on special buses to ferry pupils to and from exams.
Coaches were due to leave Notre Dame High for St Joseph's at 8.30am this morning and pupils were expected to return to the school at around 12.30pm.
Council bosses say the premises are likely to remain closed until Thursday.
A spokesman added: "Notre Dame High School in Greenock will remain closed until Thursday following a power surge which left the school without an electrical supply.
"Work has been carried out overnight and good progress has been made, however it has been decided that the school will remain closed until Thursday to ensure repairs are completed and there are no outstanding operational or safety issues."
