50 calls in Elaine murder hunt
POLICE hunting the killer of tragic teenager Elaine Doyle have received 50 calls and fresh leads following a national TV appeal.
A reconstruction of Elaine's last moments was screened on BBC1's Crimewatch programme on Tuesday night and officers from Operation Evergreen want to thank the public for their response.
The calls have generated new lines of inquiry for the team and the name of a new suspect has been given twice by two separate callers.
The high-profile appeal marks the 25th anniversary of the 16-year-old's murder and now, thanks to advances in DNA, police have a profile and are desperate to trace her killer.
Detective Inspector John Dearie, from Operation Evergreen, said: "We have had an excellent response from the public to the TV appeal and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who contacted the show.
"These calls have produced new lines of enquiry for the Evergreen team and we will now be following these up.
"We also received calls from the public at Greenock police office and were contacted via email, and all of these provided useful information for the team.
"We are however still looking for more information and more names. I would urge anyone who has any information about the events of Sunday 1 June 1986, no matter how insignificant they think it might be, to contact us. That small piece of information or suspicion you have could well be the crucial link to finding Elaine's killer and finally giving her mum and dad the answers they deserve."
Anyone with any information should contact Greenock police office on 492000. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
