APPEAL: The teenager.

DETECTIVES leading the hunt for Elaine Doyle's killer have revealed the number of calls from the public has doubled to more than 100 in the past 24 hours.

After the teenager's case was revisited on the top-rated Crimewatch programme earlier this week, the number of calls has now soared to more than 100. The Tele revealed yesterday that within hours of the show airing on the BBC, the investigation team, Operation Evergreen, had taken 50 calls.

But the officers - who are now following up all fresh leads - are urging the public to continue to pick up the phone with any suspicions they may have harboured for the past 25 years.

Detective Constable Willie Brandon said this morning: "We consider this to be an excellent response after 25 years. Overnight, there have been another four calls made.

"Our lines are still open and we are looking for the public to continue to pick up the phone. We are now going to research all the new names and fresh leads.

"A case like this will never be closed - it will only be closed when the person responsible is convicted of this murder."

The Evergreen team, led by Detective Inspector John Dearie, are now hoping the new information will finally allow them to find the person who killed 16-year-old Elaine.

On Wednesday night, her last hours were reconstructed on national television and her family spoke about their living nightmare ever since that fateful night on Sunday 1 June 1986.

The teenager left a disco in the Celtic Supporters Club to walk home to Ardgowan Street, but she never made it.

Her body was found the next day in a lane close to her house.

Detective Constable Brandon added: "We now have to take time to access and evaluate all the information passed to us."

Anyone with information should contact Greenock Police on 492000. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
