Golden celebration for couple
A GOLDEN couple celebrating 50 years of happy marriage first met in hospital.
Bill Orr was just 18 and suffering from an acute form of arthritis when he was admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where wife Gwen was a young nurse on night duty for the first time.
Gwen nursed Bill back to health and the couple hit it off after discovering they were born on the same day - 8 October 1939.
When Bill was discharged six weeks later, they went on a dinner date.
Gwen, who is from Gourock, said: "His mum and dad gave him money for a meal."
Romance blossomed and three years later Bill, who was originally from Paisley, and Gwen were married in Gourock Baptist Church.
The couple, both 72, live in Gourock's Albert Road but over the years have moved around - living in Liverpool, London, the Midlands and Livingston.
Bill is a retired physiotherapist and Gwen has now also retired from nursing.
They have a son Graeme, 47, and a daughter Gweneth, 44, as well as two grandsons.
The couple put the success of their marriage down to the fact they have a lot of common interests and like the same things in life.
Bill said: "We like the theatre, music and gardening - although Gwen is the gardener and I am the labourer."
Bill and Gwen plan to celebrate their special anniversary with a meal for seven that will also be attended by best man Alastair Sutherland.

Report commentNice to see a story like this - when a couple who love each other celebrate the occasion of fifty years of marraige: It's more usually fifty days of marraige nowadays, therefore fifty years is a celebration indeed. God bless them and to many more years of happiness.
