Waterfront gym takes top award
INVERCLYDE Leisure's Waterfront Fitness Gym has been named as the UK's top local authority gym.
The facility saw off fierce competition from more than 500 nominations in the National Fitness Awards to land the title.
Delighted gym staff have just returned from Birmingham, where they received their award at a glitzy presentation ceremony.
The award-winning gym was inspected and judged by a six-strong panel with over 30 years of experience in the health and fitness industry - and bosses are delighted to have won their ultimate seal of approval.
John Higgins, chief executive of Inverclyde Leisure, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the standards we are continually working hard to achieve for our customers.
"I would personally like to thank staff for their continued effort in helping to achieve this prestigious award."
Waterfront Leisure Centre general manager David McCorkindale added: "It's a great achievement for Inverclyde.
"We are grateful for the continued support of our staff and coaches, who contribute so much within the company, delivering first-class facilities and service for our customers.
"I would like to dedicate this award to all customers and members of our facilities, and would like to especially thank them for their continued commitment and support over the years."
The awards event was hosted by Katherine Kelly, who plays Becky McDonald in TV soap Coronation Street.
Inverclyde Leisure staff also got the chance to meet a whole host of top figures from the fitness industry.
The Waterfront fitness gym will be 10 years old in February and has gone from strength to strength since opening in 2002.
It has gone from a membership of 700 up to over 4,000, including cardiac rehab clients.
The gym also offers a wide range of classes, including popular Aqua Zumba and Kettlebell sessions.

Report commentWell done. It's a great gym to visit with friendly staff. Any word of when the Gourock gym will be opening? When you compare how quickly the new schools flew up compared to this little building it seems tobe taking an inordinate time.

Report commentWell done David and his team.
I agree with Anne 13 re the Gourock Pool Building - Obviously I cant see inside but from the external work I see every weekend, it doesnt seem to have progressed in weeks. If it was to be finished by March, I would of thought the best time for brick laying, rendering, roofing etc would of been before now and not in the depths of winter when the temperatures affect cement curing and a persons working conditions.

Report commentWhereas I reluctantly have to congratulate IL on their achievement I do on the other hand have to question how high the bar was set for IL to win any award of any description.
OK folks you have set yourself a standard. May I firstly say that I wish you would service your machines to an acceptable standard and service them every week at least. A wee wipe down with some soapy water is hardly a proper service. As a 'FLAGSHIP' FOR Inverclyde your machines, bikes, rowers etc should be in as good as a condition as if they were purchased. PROPER servicing can keep these things going for years. After all I do pay you my membership fees and I expect quality service.
As for the staff in the Waterfront, a wee crash course on 'smiling' might help.
Don't sit back on your laurels and THINK you have reached a pinnacle in gym standards by way of a glorified paper-weight. That said well done in getting yourself of the floor.
