Planned college strike suspended
LECTURERS at James Watt College have called off planned strikes for the next fortnight.
The college announced the move this afternoon and walkouts that had been due to go ahead from tomorrow will not take place.
The decision was taken so that union members can discuss a new offer from management in a bid to finally end a row triggered over proposals which would see 28 senior lecturers have their contracts terminated.
Under the plans they would be asked to apply for 15 new 'learning enhancement leader' posts on less wages.
Principal Sue Pinder said: "I am delighted at the suspension of the industrial action and encourage members of EIS-FELA employed at James Watt College to accept the offer on the table.
"Resuming business as usual is a huge relief, not least for our students, who will continue to get the strongest support available as they pursue their various qualifications at our four campuses in Inverclyde and North Ayrshire."

Report commentThere is no offer here! This supposed offer would basically rip up terms and conditions of the staff and allow management to bring in trainers and facilitators to prevent management being cut. This would result in the long term stability of the college and the quality of students education to be put at risk. The strike will resume after the ballot is carried out and the joke of an offer rejected! Management, your time is short! You have been found out and your stay in the college looks to be coming to an end. The students took a vote on Monday and overwhelmingly back the lecturing staff!
