Council could invest further £9m
INVERCLYDE Council announced this morning that it could be set to invest an additional £9 million as part of its forthcoming budget.
It says additional cash is available due to 'ongoing prudent financial management and efficiencies being achieved earlier than anticipated'.
Audit Scotland recently praised the local authority for its financial strategy, saying it was an example of good practice for other councils.
The surplus will be invested in a series of one-off projects to be agreed at a special full council meeting next Thursday.
Management have put forward a number of recommendations - including £3million for capital projects, £1 million for the refurbishment of the Watt Complex in Greenock and £300,000 extra towards the building of a new Inverkip Community facility.
Councillors will be told the council has a 'head start' in addressing the significant financial pressure it will face over the next two-year budget covering the period 2013-15, and that the strategy of setting two-year budgets has proved 'successful in terms of both financial and workforce planning'.
