TORY leader Ruth Davidson today insisted she is confident about her party's prospects when Inverclyde goes to the polls in May.

The newly elected leader of the Scottish Conservatives visited Greenock's James Watt Dock this week to endorse the party hopefuls who will be standing in each of Inverclyde's six council wards.

Ms Davidson, who has been in the job just short of three months since replacing Annabel Goldie, says her party in Scotland is on the up.

Councillor and depute provost David Wilson is the sole Conservative voice on the current council but Ms Davidson now expects a good showing from his colleagues.

The Tory candidates will be Mr Wilson for ward one, Harry Osborn in ward two, Graeme Brooks in ward three, Duncan Simpson in ward four, Gus McLean in ward five and Iain Macleod in ward six.

Ms Davidson said: "David has done a fantastic job as depute provost and I really want to see David with a few more Conservative friends on the benches and in the chambers of Inverclyde Council.

"I think they have a really big part to play in this part of the world.

"Inverclyde is the export capital of Scotland and we need good, right-minded, local people to keep these exports and help the businesses in the area.

"I think we have fantastic candidates with a wealth of experience and local knowledge of the area and they are willing to put in the leg work to represent the people here.

"I am on doorsteps every day in every part of the country and three out of four times it is the local council issues that matter more than anything.

"So you need strong local representatives and that is what we have here in Inverclyde.

"We have more candidates standing and we will see a strong Conservative presence in Inverclyde and Scotland after the May elections."

Councillor Wilson added: "No one will have an overall majority at the election and the balance could well be with the Conservatives - so a Conservative vote will not be a wasted vote.

"I have shown what one Conservative can do at Inverclyde Council so what could three or four do?"
