Councillor 'delighted' at centre's report
A SENIOR councillor is delighted at a positive report card for an education centre which works with young people who have additional support needs.
A report released earlier this week by education watchdogs praised the Mearns Centre, Greenock, for a series of strengths.
The centre provides an alternative to mainstream education and care services for young people who are experiencing social and emotional difficulties.
Inspectors found that its staff work hard to identify new and creative ways to involve young people and improve their learning.
Councillor Terry Loughran, pictured, who chairs the council's education committee, said: "This report is a reflection of the hard work everyone involved in the Mearns Centre does to provide excellent educational opportunities for every pupil.
"Self-confidence and self-esteem are such an important part of growing up and particular attention is paid to each individual's needs."
Last August the Mearns Centre was named as an example of good practice by government inspectors.
Inverclyde Council is moving the centre to a new unit at the former St Laurence's Primary School, as part of a £2 million plan to double the number of places available from 12 to 24.

Report commentCllr Loughran's remark's added nothing to the earlier piece re the possitive report on the Mearns Centre. He is as usual trotting out the same old cliches and stating the obvious in an attemt to gain credit by association. As stated before,he is not alone in this behaviour.
And why the need for the head and shoulders photograph,if not merely to fill up column inches? There surely cannot be many Tele readers out there who don't already know what Loughran's face looks like(that goes for other councillors too),given that he is "never oot the Tully" as they say. I did wonder where he found the time to indulge in such publicity seeking activity until someone told me that he had retired from his employment some months ago. Well, that would explain it!
Could it be that Loughran is,as some other councillors appear to be,so insecure and terrified of being voted out at May's elections,or is it more to do with egotism? Either way it is not healthy for the Tele to be so indulgent toward him and other like polititions, especially in the run-up to an election.
