INVERCLYDE Council has been named as main sponsor of the Tele-backed 2011 Inverclyde Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Almost 30 teams and individuals have been shortlisted in seven categories to recognise and reward their efforts in sport at local, regional and national level.

The Tele has profiled all the candidates in the running for a prize and votes for them have been flooding in from the public.

Council leader Stephen McCabe said: "I am delighted the council is sponsoring this event, which recognises the hard work, commitment and achievements of local people who are dedicated to their sports - in some cases over the period of a lifetime.

"It's important that we nurture and encourage people to participate in sport for all of the health and social benefits it brings.

"This event reflects the wealth and breadth of talent in Inverclyde across a wide range of sports and is a showpiece event that should encourage more people to get involved."

The top three nominees in each category will be judged by a panel of judges headed by BBC Scotland's Chick Young.

The winners will be revealed at the Awards Dinner in Greenock Town Hall on Friday 24 February.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Inverclyde Leisure, Greenock Telegraph and New Horizons Marketing, Chris Jewell added: "We are delighted that Inverclyde Council has agreed to be our event sponsor, backing up their very significant investment in sports facilities in Inverclyde.

"This is a real fillip to the awards event and in turn will mean that we shall be able to more meaningfully help Inverclyde sportsmen and women as they seek to be selected to represent Scotland in their chosen sport in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014."
