A COUPLE in their 60s were robbed and threatened in Greenock's Bank Street last night.

The man tried to intervene when his wife's handbag was grabbed.

He suffered a slight hand injury but did not need medical treatment.

They were approached at 8.30pm by a man described as being aged between 16 and 24.

Detective Sergeant Gerard McWatt said: "The robber threatened the couple with a blunt implement, grabbed the handbag and ran off.

"The handbag contained personal items and a small amount of money."

The robber is described as being five feet eight inches tall and of medium build with dark brown hair.

He was wearing a dark green or dark blue fleece 'hoodie' top and dark bottoms.

DS McWatt added an appeal for witnesses.

He said: "We'd like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious."

Anyone with information is asked to call CID on 492500.
