Workers fight to save Peacocks
STAFF at Peacocks in Greenock are joining a UK-wide grassroots campaign to save the threatened cut-price fashion chain.
The owners of the retail company went into administration last month after falling into financial trouble.
Now all 11 employees in the West Blackhall Street store, above, are working with other staff across the country to keep the brand on the high street.
They are lobbying local politicians as well as encouraging as many customers as possible to sign an online 'Save Peacocks' petition.
A member of staff, who asked not to be named, said: "We have had great support so far from our customers.
"They have even been saying prayers for us.
"We are a very busy store and we really hope that they can find a buyer for Peacocks.
"It is very popular and had been performing well. We have been speaking to our local politicians about the situation and we are encouraging customers to sign the petition."
The Tele reported earlier this month that the Bon Marche stores, an arm of the Peacocks chain, had been bought over with the Greenock branch one of 230 to remain open.
Now their Peacocks counterparts hope they too can have a happy ending.
Administrators KPMG are in the process of trying to find a buyer for the stores and have reported a high level of interest.
Staff at the Greenock store are among the 9,300 Peacocks employees who have managed to collected 42,000 signatures so far since launching the 'Save Peacocks' campaign.
