Kids' ward to stay open
CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed news that the under-threat children's ward at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley has been saved from closure.
Bosses from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board have shelved plans to close the ward in the Paisley hospital after strong community protests.
Campaigners from the Kids Need Our Ward fight had launched a furious protest against the controversial plans last year, and after months of online petitions and public meetings, they are claiming victory.
Concerns had been expressed locally that any closure would have an adverse impact on families in Inverclyde and many of them joined the online campaign as they feared they would have to travel even further for treatment.
One campaigner said: "Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board have at last realised that closing the children's ward would have serious impacts on other services.
"So they have effectively shelved the plans by incorporating the review of children's services at the RAH into a wider review of services.
"Although this is not the end and the health board may decide to come back, it is certain that for the time being the children's ward at the RAH is safe.
"This is a massive victory for the campaigners, all the people who signed the petition and for people power in general."
The RAH children's ward is the closest overnight ward to Inverclyde following the closures at the IRH.
Health board bosses today declined to publicly comment on the development until the board meets to formally discuss the new review plans next week.
