THE tireless fundraising efforts of a breast cancer sufferer from Greenock have made £16,500 for Inverclyde Royal's oncology unit.

Kyla McKinlay, 36, pictured, captured the hearts of local people when she shared the story of her fight against cancer.

In a bid to raise awareness of the disease among young women, and money for the local oncology unit, she organised a 'Baldy March' from her Overton home to Gourock.

Local people signed up to take part in their hundreds and donations flooded in from across the country.

Kyla is now nearing the end of her chemotherapy before she starts radiotherapy at The Beatson in Glasgow.

She had initially hoped to raise a few thousand pounds but she was left overwhelmed when the total figure continued to rise.

Kyla, who lives at Glen Douglas Place with her husband Scott and six-year-old son Kerr, said: "I am over the moon.

"I could cry when I think about how much money we have raised and how generous local people have been.

"I have had some big donations but mostly it is ordinary hard working people who have given me amounts of £50 or £100 - which is a lot of money."

Kyla will present the cheque for £16,500 to the staff at the IRH oncology unit tomorrow.
