PRIMARY school children from across Inverclyde made a big splash at this year's swimming gala.

Swimmers from Ardgowan, Gourock, Inverkip, Moorfoot, St Mary's and Wemyss Bay took the plunge as they enjoyed the finals at the Waterfront Leisure Centre.

The gala is open to primary six pupils who competed in the front crawl, backcrawl and breast stroke, with some fun events thrown in too, including hoopla, football and an obstacle race.

On the day of the finals the children had a fantastic time and went home with a well-deserved goody bag, plus medals and ribbons.

In the end the overall winners were Moorfoot Primary in first place, Gourock Primary second place, Argowan Primary third place, Inverkip in fourth place, St Mary's in fifth place and Wemyss Bay finishing sixth.

The annual gala day, always an eagerly-awaited event, is organised by Inverclyde Leisure in partnership with the coucil.

They would like to thank Councillor James McColgan for coming along on the day, as well as the parents and grandparents who provided lots of vocal support.

Meanwhile, Inverclyde Leisure says it would like to welcome all local school pupils along to the Waterfront, as well as their pools in Port Glasgow and Gourock, over the summer holidays. The pools are free to use for all schoolchildren.
