A TOP UK retailer will open its new £500,000 Greenock store on Saturday.

As exclusively revealed by the Tele in December, discount goods chain Home Bargains is setting up shop in the former Comet premises in the Waterfront Retail Park, bringing 40 new jobs — 10 more than first anticipated.

Provost Robert Moran will cut the ribbon at the Customhouse Way outlet, pictured, at 8.30am.

Joe Morris, operations director at Home Bargains, said: “We’re excited to be opening our first store in Greenock and look forward to welcoming new customers through the doors.” Home Bargains sells homeware, beauty products, sweets, food and drink.

Earlier this month the firm was granted permission by the Inverclyde Licensing Board to sell alcohol.

Bosses expect their Greenock outlet to have a typical annual turnover of between £3-5 million.

The retail unit they are moving into has been empty since electrical firm Comet went bust in 2012.

Director Mr Morris said: “Customhouse Way will be a great location for us.” The arrival of Home Bargains is a timely boost to the local economy after the Tele revealed last Friday how major high street fashion chains Burton Menswear and Evans are to close their Oak Mall outlets in the summer.
