TEENAGE rockers from a Greenock school hope to make it to the top of the UK music chart with their own version of a multi-million selling album.

The young rock ‘n’ roll stars from Notre Dame High School are recording their own version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the world-famous classic record by The Beatles.

Legendary music stars Tom Newman, who produced the hit song Tubular Bells, the theme song for The Exorcist, and platinum selling rock guitarist Paul Brett are behind the project and will help the local youngsters record their album over the coming weeks.

Louise Taylor, a modern studies teacher at the school, says it is a unique chance for the pupils to showcase their music skills.

She said: “It’s a brilliant opportunity and what the children would really like to do is knock Simon Cowell off the number one spot at Christmas!

“Tom and Paul came in to speak to us in the summer and they were great and so enthusiastic about the project.” Megan Cleary, an S1 pupil who plays the saxophone, is enjoying taking part in the scheme.

The 12-year-old said: “This is a great project for people who like music and are interested in it.” Young music supremo Fergus Hall, 17, has already created his own Celtic version of one of the songs from the album. He told the Tele: “Tom and Paul are so enthusiastic about the music and had a real passion which is infectious.

“We got the impression that they are very excited about the possibilities this project has both musically and creatively.” Bass guitarist Ryan Welch, 15, an S4 pupil, is thrilled to be paying homage to The Beatles and excited about where it might lead.

He said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Notre Dame is one of only a handful of Scottish schools taking part in the project, called Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Children of Scotland.

They will record the album at Easter time.
