The 19-year-old male was a passenger in a vehicle with four other males which was involved in a collision with a lorry on the A8 next to Coronation Park.

Fire crews were forced to cut the roof off the car, pictured, so the man could be treated and freed.

He was then rushed to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank for treatment.

An air ambulance which flew to the scene was not required.

Police said early this morning that his condition was 'critical but stable'.

The other four men were treated at Inverclyde Royal Hospital but later released after escaping with cuts and bruises. The lorry driver was not injured.

The incident happened yesterday at around 8.40am when a white Vauxhall pulled out of Bay Street and was struck by the westbound lorry.

The road was closed in both directions for more than six hours, causing traffic chaos in Port Glasgow town centre until police reopened it at 3.45pm.

Details of those involved have yet to be released.

A police crash emergency team remained on site for several hours after the crash and a full investigation has been launched.
