FOOTIE-MAD youngsters were on the ball when a top player visited their sports camp.

Celtic starlet Liam Henderson chatted with the next generation of local heroes at Notre Dame High School.

The teenage sensation posed for photos with starstruck fans and signed autographs during the first Celtic FC Easter Skill School to be held in Inverclyde.

James Houten is the chair of a local steering group who campaigned for seven years to bring the Parkhead side to Inverclyde. He said: “There were 10 of us on a steering group to give kids an option and give them something to do.

“We had 50 youngsters during the week — it’s been a great success. The mums and dads have been along and it’s created a lot of excitement.” Liam, 17, is a product of the Celtic Academy, a Scottish internationalist and now a first team player.

The midfielder was awarded SPFL young player of the month in March after breaking into Neil Lennon’s first team squad. James said: “Liam’s only 17 himself, it’s not that long ago that he was at these camps himself — that inspires youngsters. They’ve been very excited about meeting him.” Mini kickers aged between five and 12 have been enjoying sessions at the school with Celtic coaches.

Parents say they’ve had a great time.

Greenock mums Joanne Stewart, Karen Burns and Nicola O’Neill from Inverkip took their eight-year-old boys Nathan, Jack and Cain along.

Joanne, 31, said: “Nathan’s really enjoyed the camp because he supports Celtic. He’s been excited about meeting Liam.” Karen said her son Jack met new friends though the sessions.

She said: “He’s learned loads of new skills and met lots of new people.”
