IT was green for go at Lady Alice Bowling Club as members gathered for its open day.

About 30 members, who looked resplendent in their attire, looked on as club president Sammy Hunter’s daughter, Kerry, threw the first bowl.

After their first outdoor game of the season, members then enjoyed a delicious buffet and listened to speeches from club representatives before they watched the Grand National.

Match Secretary Peter Boyle, said it was a terrific day.

He said: “It was great as in the morning there were heavy rain showers but it cleared up for the start. We played 10 ends and everyone enjoyed food and drinks afterwards as well as a flutter on the national.” As well as members, there were also guests from other clubs and Bill Knox from Bowls Scotland attended.

Club secretary Joseph Carruthers, agreed it was a fantastic day and hopes it will encourage more people to take up the sport.

He said: “It’s not an old man’s game like some people think.

“It’s for people of all ages and abilities.

“Nothing beats playing a game of bowls outside on a nice day.” Joseph says the club has a thriving junior section.

He added: “We have about 20 junior players and we have had about six or seven of the juniors move on to play in the league.

“We have juniors training at 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday and after school on Wednesdays, so anyone who is interested should come down.” The club, which also has 34 female and 53 male members, is now looking forward to another busy outdoor playing season.
