VICTORIA Bowling Club marked its 117th open day in style.

Dark clouds shifted and the sun shone through as 60 members lined the green for the momentous occasion.

The first bowl was thrown by club president Jim Harkness’s wife Catherine.

Club secretary Alan Newman said it was the perfect start to a long summer of bowls.

He said: “It went very well.

“We were lucky as the weather was bad in the morning but it was ok in the afternoon.

“We played seven ends and then we enjoyed a meal afterwards.” Alan says the club caters for all ages from 13 right up to 80.

He said: “We’re keeping our heads above water and we’re always looking for new members.

“Many clubs are struggling to get new members.” The friendly East Crawford Street club has about 80 players, and caters for bowling of all standards.

It was opened on 23 June 1897 by Councillor N. M. Brown, who was the president of the club, on ground donated by James Aitken.

Members are now looking forward to a busy outdoor season.
