A MAN has been arrested by police following the death of a 65-year-old man after an incident in Greenock’s Lynedoch Street yesterday afternoon.

Police Scotland confirmed this morning that a 41-year-old had been detained in custody.

He is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court today.

Detectives launched a major investigation after they were called to the street yesterday following reports that a man had been assaulted.

Emergency services — two police vans, three police cars and an ambulance — raced to the scene at around 1.20pm.

The injured man was rushed to Inverclyde Royal in an ambulance by paramedics but died shortly afterwards.

Police had not released the victim’s name this morning.

Flowers have been left at the scene, pictured, today by grieving loved ones of the deceased.

A ring of steel was thrown around the scene yesterday as a team of officers secured and scoured the area.

The road between Lyle Street and Regent Street was taped off, as was a close and an area of the nearby Well Park.

Drivers were told that a serious incident had taken place and were turned away while residents and people in local shops looked stunned at what had happened.

An eyewitness said: “The ambulance service took a man away wrapped in a sheet.” A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “An investigation is under way following the death of a man in Lynedoch Street, Greenock.

“Officers were notified that a man had been assaulted around 1.20pm.

“The injured man was taken to hospital but died shortly thereafter.

“A port mortem examination will be carried out and inquiries are continuing.
