RESIDENTS across Inverclyde are being urged to get themselves along to a massive free music and sports event in Greenock to mark the start of the Commonwealth Games.

Inverclyde Council has unveiled the full programme of activities that will take place on Monday 14 July to mark the arrival of the baton — including a headline performance from X Factor star Nicholas McDonald as reported in the Tele earlier this week.

His performance at Battery Park will be part of Youth In The Park — an event supported through Games For Scotland — which will include a range of sports taster sessions, music, dance, circus acts, workshops, community stalls and sportscotland’s ‘Unleash Your Sport’ roadshow.

It all kicks-off at 1pm building up to the arrival of the baton at 6.45pm and the performance by Nicholas at 7.15pm.

Provost Robert Moran said: “Over 80 local champions have been recognised by Glasgow 2014 and will carry the Queen’s Baton through the area. I would like to extend a special invitation for the end of day celebrations to our batonbearers, so the people of Inverclyde get a chance to say well done!” Games For Scotland is managed by EventScotland and is a key part Legacy 2014 — the Scottish Government programme aimed at ensuring the games create a lasting impact across Scotland.

Paul Bush OBE, chief operating officer for EventScotland, said: “We are delighted to be working with Inverclyde Council to deliver an inspiring and motivating event, building excitement in the run-up to the games.

“The diverse programme of sport and dance events, which this year additionally celebrate the arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay, extend the legacy of the Games beyond the host city to benefit communities throughout Scotland.” For more information on the Queen’s Baton Relay visit programme, log on to www.inverclyde.gov.uk
