A COMMONWEALTH Games umpire from Greenock has bowled over BBC bosses who decided to feature him on prime-time programme The One Show.

Pat Woods was interviewed at Hillend Bowling Club yesterday as he prepares for his key officiating role in the Glasgow Games, which begin next week.

In April, the Tele revealed how the Greenock grandad had been chosen from 900 umpires across the country to participate in the games.

Now he will feature on the BBC flagship news magazine-style programme, presented by Alex Jones and Matt Baker, in front of an audience of five million people.

Pat said: “I’m over the moon at being on TV, and so is the club and my family.

“My family are ecstatic.

“They will be glued to the television that night.

“The club is also delighted.

“I was on television a long time ago during the National Indoor Championships at Coatbridge but nothing like this.

“It will put bowling, the club and Inverclyde on the map.

“I’m usually out on the bowling green or at the indoor bowling but I will make sure I am home to see the programme and I’ll make sure everybody knows when it is on.” Pat, who is secretary and vice-chair of Hillend Bowling Club in Greenock’s east end, is married to Anne and they live in Carwood Court in Greenock.

They have three grown-up children, Patrick, 43, Brian, 39, and Karen, who’s 35.

Pat will oversee games at the nine-day lawn bowls competition at Kelvingrove, which will also be broadcast on TV.

The competition is expected to attract up to 2,500 spectators a day.

He said: “I’ve umpired at World Championships before but never at Commonwealth level. It’s an accolade, especially with the games being in Glasgow.”
