COME out and support Saturday’s River Clyde Commonwealth Games flotilla — that’s the message going out to Inverclyde people today.

More than 1,200 sailors on a total of 250 boats of various sizes will leave from Greenock’s James Watt Dock to head up to Glasgow as part of the Games celebrations.

The event is being organised by the Scottish branch of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), who are urging spectators to come out in force to see the historic event, which will involve what is believed to be the largest collection of boats ever assembled on the River Clyde.

RYA Scotland chief executive James Stuart said: “The response we’ve had from people wanting to take part in the flotilla was overwhelming — and we want as many people as possible to join us for the grand departure at the Beacon for a fantastic viewing opportunity to get a real sense of the size and scale of the event.

“The Commonwealth flotilla is shaping up to be one of the must-see events of 2014.” The boats will start to gather at about 8.30am before they depart at about 10am to travel 17 nautical miles to Pacific Quay — next to the BBC HQ and Glasgow Science Centre — arriving from about 12.30.

Organisers say the best viewing point will be just outside the Beacon, where there will be a big screen and a live commentator delivering information on the boats and what is happening.

Inverclyde Council is spending £250,000 to support the event, with the investment also being used to secure longer-term improvements to James Watt Dock.

The council’s environment and regeneration convener, Councillor Michael McCormick, says our waterfront is the perfect setting for a spectacular send-off that has the potential to deliver a long-lasting legacy for Inverclyde and marine tourism in Scotland.

He said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Inverclyde, its sailing opportunities, maritime history and modern marine leisure services on a global stage.” Another dedicated spectator area will be set up at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

A spokeswoman for the RYA said: “The RYA Scotland team will be at the Riverside Museum from 11am through to 4pm, and will have lots of different activities to keep youngsters entertained.

“We will also be giving information on how to get on the water if you are keen to try sailing or boating.” The progress of the flotilla can be tracked via the RYA’s Facebook page (Commonwealth Flotilla) and Twitter feed @Flotilla2014
