A CRASH barrier has been installed to improve safety at a notorious Gourock accident blackspot — thanks to a Tele appeal.

Inverclyde Council’s roads department have acted quickly to prevent any more cars flying off the roadway at a dangerous bend on Larkfield Road and ploughing into the gardens of people living nearby.

Locals have been calling for action following a spate of crashes in recent years.

An accident in May saw a vehicle veer off the road before crashing into a garage and landing on its side.

Now a crash barrier runs along the hazardous stretch, to the delight of those living in nearby South Lodge.

The safety barrier was installed after the Telegraph highlighted the issue and a campaign for action by locals.

Resident George Irvine, pictured above, whose garage was badly damaged during the incident in May, said: “I think the article helped — this highlights the power of the press.

“I’m overjoyed as this will make a big difference and stop folk coming through my hedges and wrecking my garage.

“It will also improve safety.” Local authority chiefs hope the new measures will protect both pedestrians and residents — but have urged motorists to reduce their speed and drive with care on the road.

A council spokesman said: “We have been aware of the safety issues on this stretch of road and have been looking at taking appropriate action.

“The work will make this a safer road and will reduce the risks to residents and pedestrians.

“Motorists should always drive according to the road and weather conditions, stick to the speed limit, and obey warning signs at all times.” Homeowner George today praised the council for acting so promptly.

He said: “Well done to Inverclyde Council for moving so fast.

“There will now be ‘slow’ signs put up and road markings painted along with the barriers.”
