A HERO Greenock dad rescued a tot from under a train as stunned passengers at Scotland’s busiest station looked on in horror.

Brave John Scott, 28, scrambled down the side of a platform after the boy dropped some 6ft from a doorway onto the tracks at Glasgow Central on Sunday afternoon.

He then dragged the four-year-old away from an engine blasting out hot air.

John, of Lothian Road, had been heading to a wrestling show at the O2 with a friend when the drama happened.

He said: “The train was full of people going to the Commonwealth Games and there were lots of people trying to get off.

“A mother was putting a one-year-old into a pram while her other boy was swinging from the handle of the door.

“He tried to get off, but it’s a big gap.

“The next thing, the wee guy disappeared between the platform and the train.

“The mother was screaming and so were people on the platform, but no one was doing anything.

“I jumped down between the platform and the train.

“He had fallen and rolled towards the wheels near a fan in the engine which was spinning round.

“I tried to get him away from this thing — it was making so much noise and the heat coming from it was unreal. The wee man was in shock and was just screaming.” John’s rescue drew cheers from the crowd who had gathered at the side of the platform.

He said: “The mother was constantly saying thank-you and people were clapping.” The little boy involved in the incident on platform 15 was unhurt but shaken. Modest John, a single dad-of-three, has played down his bravery — and told the Tele that he thought that anyone else would have done the same.

He said: “I just did something which I thought anyone would do. But no-one there did!” John’s friend Stephanie Robo said: “I think John deserves a medal for his courage and kindness he has shown.

“He has three children of his own and risked everything to jump under a train and save a toddler.” John’s pal Sean Carney, 28, who witnessed the rescue, said: “It was spur of the moment and he reacted immediately by jumping down, he never thought about his own safety to help the toddler.

“It was very brave.” A spokesperson for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “The incident was reported to BTP shortly after 4.45pm and officers attended.

“A four-year-old boy from Manchester appears to have lost his balance after alighting from the train at Glasgow Central.

“He was helped back on to the platform by his mother.

“He wasn’t injured and medical treatment wasn’t required.”
