Connor Grana, 18, appeared in private on petition at Greenock Sheriff Court this afternoon.
Grana made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
The case has been committed for further examination until his next court appearance on 8 August.
Dad-of-two Mr McGowan was found seriously injured within a close on Tobago Street in the early hours of Sunday 27 July and died shortly afterwards.
