A GREENOCK school pupil has been arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault.

Police were called to Notre Dame High in the town after a 16-year-old boy sustained an eye injury.

It is understood that another boy, also 16, was taken into custody by officers shortly after 10am on Monday morning.

The Telegraph understands that it has been claimed a punch was thrown as both pupils were within a classroom.

Police confirmed that the injured boy was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for emergency treatment.

A court appearance for the alleged attacker is yet to take place.

Inverclyde Council today refused to comment on the matter.

But the local authority moved to reassure parents and pupils about safety in the district’s schools.

A Municipal Buildings spokesman said: “Safety in our schools is a top priority and we have robust procedures in place to ensure our children and young people learn in a safe and secure environment.

“Any incident will be treated seriously and dealt with appropriately.”
