A FURIOUS Greenock businessman fears he will be forced to close his fast food joint if ‘mindless vandals’ continue to damage his property.

John Rasmussen, 49, pictured, is at the end of his tether after yobs climbed onto the roof of John’s Joint in Lynedoch Street and stuffed a football into the extractor system.

It is the latest in a string of incidents which have cost him hundreds of pounds in repairs.

He said: “I’m absolutely scunnered about this.

“If the vandalism keeps up I’ll have to think about closing.

“When you’re working 70 to 80 hours a week to make ends meet then you’re having to spend what little money you make on repairs it is soul destroying.

“I’ve got children and a mortgage to pay for.

“We have a good business here and if we have to close then everybody else will suffer.” Police are investigating the incident, which happened sometime between last Monday at 5pm and just before 6am on Tuesday morning.

John added: “I realised something was wrong when the extractor fan made a loud noise.

“I had to call out an engineer who told me that it was lucky that the extractor fan hadn’t blown up as it would have cost about £1,500.

“If that had happened then I definitely would have just closed the door there and then.

“I still ended up having to pay about £248 for a mesh cover for the system.” Previous incidents include extensive damage to an electric shutter and an illuminated LED light being smashed up at the shop.

John, who runs the cafe with his wife Maureen, believes youths are behind the incidents.

Sergeant Allan O’Hare of Greenock Police is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: “We are treating this as vandalism.

“Anyone with information should phone 101.”
