A MAN was rushed to hospital after falling nearly 30 feet through a roof at Funworld in Greenock yesterday.

Cafe worker Robert Murdoch broke his pelvis and ribs after slipping through a panel then smashing through a suspended ceiling at the family entertainment centre.

He had gone up a ladder outside the building to offer maintenance workers a cup of tea when the incident happened around 10.30am.

Shocked colleagues saw him crash onto the floor of the cafe and immediately called for an ambulance.

He was taken out of the building by stretcher and is currently recovering at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where his condition is reported as stable.

Mr Murdoch, who is in his 40s and from Wemyss Bay, is the husband of Sharon Murdoch, managing director of Funworld.

Douglas Brands, a director at the company and Mr Murdoch’s brother-in-law, said: “Robert had an accident and was taken to Inverclyde Royal.

“It looks like he went onto the roof to offer contractors a cup of tea and fell through the ceiling into a empty cafe area.

“Thankfully no customers were present.

“He is stable, however he has sustained a broken pelvis and broken ribs.

“Luckily for Robert it looks as if the suspended ceiling may have broken his fall.

“Our thoughts are with Sharon and her girls and we wish Robert a speedy recovery.” Funworld was closed in the aftermath of the incident and is expected to reopen tomorrow once a broken roof tile and the suspended roof of the cafe are fixed.

Mr Brands added: “Robert is the smiling face behind the cafe here.

“He is well liked by customers so they will be saddened to hear that he was injured while doing a good deed.

“If the suspended ceiling wasn’t there it could have been worse.”
