A HEALTH and safety probe has been launched after a man fell nearly 30ft through a play centre roof on Monday.

Robert Murdoch, 44, was seriously injured after the horror fall at Funworld in Fort Matilda Industrial Estate, just off Eldon Street.

Health and Safety Executive officials are now looking into the accident while Mr Murdoch recovers in hospital.

He had reportedly gone on to the centre’s roof to offer maintenance workers a cup of tea.

The cafe worker fell through a loose panel and plunged on to the suspended ceiling of the centre’s cafe.

He then crashed through that on to the floor in front of horrified staff.

There were no customers in the cafe at the time.

Mr Murdoch, of Wemyss Bay, sustained a broken pelvis and ribs and was rushed by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal.

Bosses at Funworld say they have been inundated with customers getting in touch to offer good wishes for Robert.

They have thanked the well-wishers and say that their colleague is making ‘good progress’.

Funworld was closed following the incident but is expected to fully reopen today once a broken roof tile and the suspended roof of the cafe are fixed.

Police were called to the scene of the incident, which took place on Monday morning.

Sergeant Allan O’Hare, of Greenock police, said: “Police were called to a report of a 44-year-old-man having fallen from a height within an industrial unit around 11.30am on Monday.

“The man was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment, where he is currently detained.

“Medical staff describe his condition as serious but stable.

“Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the Health and Safety Executive have been notified.”
