BRITAIN’S Got Talent winner Jai McDowall joined 220 guests to raise the roof at Greenock Town Hall for this year’s Telegraph Charity Gala.

The Scottish singer was the star attraction at the charity event on Friday, hosted by comedian Tam Cowan.

Jai’s stunning six-song set was one of many highlights during the extravaganza that raised over £5,000 – and counting – for Ardgowan Hospice.

Guests enjoyed a champagne reception to begin their evening before a welcome from Telegraph editor Brian Hossack.

Inverclyde Council chief executive John Mundell was the victor in the charity icebreaker game but the hospice ran out the real winner after Mr Mundell generously donated his £500 winner’s prize straight back to the charity.

Guests were treated to a sumptuous three course meal courtesy of Tony Buckley and ICE Scotland, who were also responsible for the stunning decor within the hall.

It was then time for Tam Cowan to provide the laughs as he hosted the charity auction and raffle while enjoying some banter with the audience.

Star items included afternoon tea with Eastenders’ star Max Branning, a signed Rangers strip, donated by Gourock’s own Robbie Crawford, and a hospitality day at Cappielow, courtesty of Morton chairman Douglas Rae.

But while Tam and Jai were the big names, there was another star of the night as a special presentation was made to local hero John Scott.

The Greenock man made Tele front page headlines after diving under a train at Glasgow Central to rescue a young boy. Modest John received a standing ovation and was given a bottle of champagne by the Telegraph in recognition of his bravery.

Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai then wowed the town hall before guests danced into the wee small hours to the sounds of YOUR Radio DJs.

Tele editor Brian Hossack said: “The gala was a huge success and, more importantly, raised a huge amount for Ardgowan Hospice.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously towards the cause throughout the evening.” Thanks go to all those who donated raffle and auction prizes.

Donors included Rangers, Celtic and Morton football clubs, Barrhead Travel, Enchanted Forest Nurseries, ICE Catering, Nicholas McDonald management, Morrisons, Keith McIntyre, Graham Faulds, Angela Harkness at Ardgowan, Moira Buck, DFDS, Alison Munro, The Water Wheel in Port Glasgow, Calmac, Cardwell Garden Centre, Ayr Racecourse, Hotel Connexions, Smiths, Anne Penman, King’s Theatre, Odeon and The Waverley.
