GRIEVING family and friends of a much-loved Greenock teenager who was killed in a car crash will take part in a touching charity walk in his memory.

Alexander Campbell was only 19 when he sadly passed away in April after he was critically injured in a road accident in Port Glasgow.

Now, as a poignant tribute to the teenager, around 70 of his family and friends will take part in a five mile ‘onesie’ walk along the Greenock Cut from Cornalees to Whinhill on Sunday.

They hope to raise as much money as they can for the Intensive Care Unit 2 (ICU 2) at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank, where Alexander was treated.

His dad Shaun, mum Helen and brother Dylan, 17, who live in Glen Douglas Way, say the walk is a chance to thank the ‘absolutely brilliant’ hospital team who cared for Alexander.

Shaun told the Tele: “I want to thank everybody who is participating in the walk, and the staff at the ICU 2 at the Golden Jubilee Hospital.

“They did everything they could to help my son, so hopefully by doing this we can help somebody else in the future.

“It’s going to help us when we see everybody turning out for the walk.

“Alexander would have been up for it, as he was fun loving and a real character.” Alexander was rushed to Inverclyde Royal after suffering a cardiac arrest at the scene of the crash on the A8 near to Coronation Park on 12 April.

He ‘died’ for 45 minutes before being brought back by medics and was transferred to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank.

His family held a constant vigil at his bedside but Alexander had suffered irreparable brain damage due to a lack of oxygen, and slipped away on 20 April.

His mum Helen is keen to thank everyone who helped in the immediate aftermath of the terrible accident and has issued a plea for two people in particular to get in touch.

Helen said: “A young couple were first on the scene of the accident.

“It was a man called Chris Nixon and his partner.

“We would like to thank them personally, so if they could please contact the Telegraph office we can get in touch with them.

“We also want to thank a nurse and a doctor who were on their way to work for trying their best.” A special thank-you also went to staff at the Beardmore Hotel, which is next to the hospital where Alexander was treated.

Helen explained: “The hotel staff could not have been more helpful.

“They gave us a room for a few nights and also let Alexander’s friends use a conference room.

“I also want to thank everyone at Tesco in Port Glasgow, where I work, for their generosity and for everything they have done.” Helen’s sister Joanne McGowan, 41, from Prospecthill View, hopes the people of Inverclyde will get behind their charity fundraiser.

She said: “We decided to do a onesie walk to add a bit of fun as it’s what Alexander would have wanted.

“We hope to raise as much money as possible, as the staff at the Golden Jubilee were amazing.” Money is being collected via sponsor forms and an online JustGiving page is also in the process of being set up.

The Telegraph will publish details of the JustGiving site once it is up and running.

Helen has also appealed for Chris Nixon and his partner to phone the Telegraph office on 558904.
