SIX new jobs could be created in a radical revamp of Greenock Sports Centre, the Tele can reveal.

The Nelson Street facility, pictured — which had once been earmarked for closure under previous plans — remains a busy hub for local fitness fanatics.

But bosses want to alter the set-up, by getting rid of an indoor astroturf pitch and transforming the space into a gym.

Centre operators Inverclyde Leisure (IL) say the change is necessary because the astroturf is under-used.

David McCorkindale, Inverclyde Leisure’s head of leisure and community facilities, said: “The proposed area is earmarked for a cross fit/ functional area, which is one of the fastest growing trends in the UK leisure industry, and will incorporate sports specific and resistance equipment, a sprint track and lifting platforms.

“This new area will also create one new full-time co-ordinator’s position, along with potentially five new part-time instructor positions.” “Unfortunately over recent years, and taking into account the fantastic outdoor schools estate pitches and 3g parks within Inverclyde, the Greenock Sports Centre astroturf area has declined in usage.

“At present we are in consultation with current users about transferring them to another football area within Greenock Sports Centre.” Although the change could create jobs, some centre users are unhappy about the switch.

One of them, David Nicol of Gourock, who uses its astro-turf five-a-side football surface, said: “This is the only indoor astro five-a-side surface in the area. I feel very strongly that there is enough choice/availability for people in the way of indoor gyms and classes for fitness, and that this is another move away from the encouragement and facility for competitive and team sport.

“The organisation also did away with a facility for playing sports such as squash a few years ago.

“While I applaud the variety of fitness classes, gyms and fitness technology, it is vital that sports are promoted, encouraged and available.” But centre boss Mr McCorkindale has defended the move.

He told the Tele: “The area in question predominately lies unoccupied Monday to Friday until 6pm, and remains unused most of the day Sunday. Footballers now prefer to use the upstairs area that was refurbished last year with a world class playing surface.” “We have carried out an impact assessment on current users, and all bookings will be accommodated at Greenock Sports Centre or alternative IL facilities.

“I’m very happy to assist with any users if they would require any further information.”
