THE Better Together campaign and its leader Alistair Darling visited Greenock yesterday to launch new campaign posters.

Mr Darling was greeted by enthusiastic supporters from Labour, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats as he posed for pictures in front of the three posters on the waterfront.

They feature the slogans I Love My Family, I Love Scotland and We Love Our Kids — followed by the words ‘no thanks’.

After the unveiling, Mr Darling spoke to the Telegraph.

He said: “We want to get as much support as we can throughout the whole of the country because we are now entering the final phase of this campaign.

“We know there are people who have still to make their minds up, and we want to maximise our support for a no vote.” Asked if he knew how the vote might go in Inverclyde, he said: “It’s impossible to tell.

“What we do know is that, listening to what people are saying, the turnout is going to be high.

“People realise it’s not like a general election where you have another chance in four or five years’ time.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. People want to take the opportunity to vote, and I hope they do.” Tensions have been running high in the debate locally, with claims that No supporters were harassed by opponents during an incident in Port Glasgow last week.

Asked about the reports, Mr Darling said: “Intimidation from either side has no place in a referendum debate. The eyes of the world are on Scotland and we want to be a credit in the way we conduct the debate.

“It’s not surprising that passions run highly. We’re talking about the future of our country. All of us should be allowed to express our views without fear.” Mr Darling’s visit was welcomed by Inverclyde MP Iain McKenzie, who said the No message was being taken to the heart of the community.

He said: “We have to make the biggest impact on undecided voters in the last two weeks of the campaign.”
