A BODY was recovered from a block of flats after a sudden death in Greenock.

The grim discovery was made on Wellington Street.

The Telegraph understands that the death of the 43-year-old woman is currently being treated as ‘unexplained’.

Police and paramedics who were alerted to the incident sent three marked cars and two ambulances to the scene.

The alarm was raised at around 6pm last Thursday evening and one resident said they had seen a body bag carried downstairs a short time later.

One eyewitness told the Tele: “We thought there’d been a murder, especially after we saw forensics people arriving.

“But it looks as though someone may have been found dead in one of the flats.” Another onlooker said: “I’d just come back home from voting Yes in the referendum when I saw all this police activity.

“But there was no cordon put in place and I didn’t see anyone standing guard at the building, so it didn’t look like foul play.” Greenock police today confirmed that the death was ‘unexplained’ but added that there did not appear to be anything suspicious about it.

Sergeant Allan O’Hare said: “I can confirm that we received a call at 6.20pm on Thursday evening in relation to the sudden death of a 43-year-old Greenock female who had a significant medical history.

“There are no suspicious circumstances, however the death is still being treated as unexplained at this time and a post-mortem will be carried out.

“A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal in Greenock.”
