FERGUSON’S has landed its first new contract since being saved from closure.
The reborn shipyard has reportedly won a £12m order from the Scottish Government to build a third hybrid eco-friendly ferry for CalMac.
It follows the yard’s successful completion of MV Hallaig and MV Lochinvar, the ‘world-first’ hybrid-powered ferries.
News of the contract caps a happy month for everyone involved with Ferguson’s, after it was rescued from administration by billionaire businessman Jim McColl.
He saved staff from the scrapheap and has already told the Tele of ambitious plans to invest up to £60m at the yard and create 300 jobs.
The Scottish Government said: “We welcome the award of a third hybrid contract to Ferguson’s following the acquisition of the shipyard by Clyde Blowers.
“This will ensure shipbuilding continues on the Lower Clyde and provide work and training opportunities for Port Glasgow and the surrounding area.
“The Scottish Government is committed to supporting the development of Ferguson Maritime Engineering Ltd into a competitive and sustainable business that can maintain and grow the proud history of Clyde shipbuilding and provide quality jobs and training opportunities for the people of Inverclyde.”
