DETECTIVES are still probing two serious assaults following a weekend of violence in Inverclyde.

The first incident took place at a high rise block of flats early on Friday evening, when a 23-year-old was allegedly set upon by two to three men at Prospecthill Court at 5pm.

He had to be taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment, where he was detained overnight. A 27-year-old man is expected to appear in court today in connection with the alleged attack.

There were two more violent attacks on Saturday night.

The first was outside the Comet Bar in Princes Street, Port Glasgow, just after 9pm.

A 31-year-old Port man was assaulted in the street and hit with an unknown object after apparently arguing with another man.

Followed by the attacker, the victim staggered a few yards into a shop and collapsed unconscious.

The suspect ran off and the shopkeeper phoned for an ambulance.

The victim lost a few teeth and was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital to have stitches inserted in a head wound near an eyebrow.

Detective Constable Euan Keil, Greenock CID, said: “The man had been drinking in the bar and had popped outside for a cigarette when he was attacked by a man who had also been in the pub.

“Officers are carrying out enquiries into this incident and are viewing CCTV footage in an effort to gather information on the person responsible.

“There were a few people in the area at the time of the assault and I would ask anyone who saw what happened or has any information that will assist us with our enquiries to contact police.

“I am particularly keen to speak to a man who came to the aid of the injured man following the attack.” Police described the assailant as being 18 to 19 years old, 5ft 6ins tall and slim. He had short, dark hair and was wearing a light coloured hoodie and similarly coloured trousers.

The second incident took place an hour later on the cycle path at Bridgend Road in Greenock, near Lady Octavia recreation centre.

A 16-year-old Greenock man was walking with a group of youths but got separated from them.

He was approached from behind by several unknown men.

One of them shouted at him and he was then struck by what appeared to be a bottle.

The man put up his right hand to protect himself and sustained ‘defensive wounds’.

He was treated at IRH and may need surgery to his hand.

Anyone with information about the assaults is asked to call the police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
