POLICE were allegedly confronted by two pupils wielding weapons at a Greenock school — and had to spray them with CS gas to disarm them.

Officers were called to a report of a disturbance involving a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old at Lomond View Academy, a school catering for primary and secondary-aged youngsters with additional learning needs.

The incident happened at 1pm on Friday.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers were confronted by the boys brandishing weapons, one of which was bladed.

“The officers used CS spray on the pupils.

“They were arrested and taken into custody.” The school remains shut in the wake of the incident but will reopen tomorrow.

The £2.34 million school is housed in the former St Laurence’s Primary in Ingleston Street. It replaced the former Mearns Centre education centre, doubling the number of places from 12 to 24.

It has been hailed by the council as providing greatly improved facilities for young people with emotional and behaviour difficulties.

The Tele understands the the pupils involved in the disturbance had broken into a technical room and were running around threatening people with tools.

Both boys involved in the incident are understood to have been released from custody on Friday evening.

They are now the subject of a report to the Children’s Reporter.

A spokesman for Inverclyde Council said: “We can confirm that a serious incident occurred.

“The police are currently investigating, and the council and school are supporting them.”
