A COUNCILLOR ‘appalled’ over the senseless slaying of animals at Gourock’s Pets’ Corner is today demanding to know why a suspect arrested more than a year ago has never faced court.

Ronnie Ahlfeld, pictured, spoke out after the Tele revealed on Monday how police probing the savage slaughter got a ‘DNA hit’ on an 18-year-old in April last year.

But prosecutors, who received a full report following the man’s arrest, have not brought any criminal proceedings forward.

Councillor Ahlfeld declared: “This information has come as a great surprise.

“I will be contacting the procurator fiscal’s office to try to understand the circumstances behind this decision.

“I am sure that the majority of local people will also demand an explanation.

“I have no details of the circumstances behind this decision, which on the face of it seems very strange.

“I recall that at the time the police were hopeful that DNA evidence would catch the perpetrators.

“Consequently I am very puzzled about the whole thing.” The Telegraph reported in June 2011 how the frenzied killing spree — carried out using of a ‘large and powerful’ dog and a golf club — left animals dead and dying within the popular Pets’ Corner grounds.

Councillor Ahlfeld said today: “Everyone was appalled at the horrible and senseless slaughter of so many animals.

“Children who regularly visit Pets’ Corner couldn’t understand how anyone could be so cruel and callous.

“I remember being called immediately after this was first discovered and when I got there, it was actually very difficult to comprehend the scenes of utter carnage.” Crown Office officials say they are ‘not permitted’ to comment on ‘closed or historic cases’ on data protection grounds.
