A SENIOR councillor has praised the quick action taken to save Ferguson’s shipyard — and told of his delight at the new £12 million contract it has secured.

The SNP’s Jim MacLeod is relieved to see the Newark facility continuing just weeks after it faced closure when the company plunged into administration.

Now under the stewardship of billionaire businessman Jim McColl, below, and his firm Clyde Blowers Capital, Ferguson’s has secured a major contract to build a third hybrid ferry for CalMac.

Mr MacLeod said: “The takeover of the yard by Jim McColl’s company has seen a transformation in the yard’s fortunes.” Councillor MacLeod congratulated the cross-party and multi-organisation task force which helped pave the way for the takeover, saying it had been a key factor in the quick turnaround.

He added: “Ferguson’s was in a bad situation a few weeks ago but with the winning of this ferry order and promises of investment the future looks very good for the yard.”
