A GREENOCK woman has bravely spoken out about the years of child abuse she suffered at the hands of her pervert uncle.

Shannon Douglas was only five when Daniel Williamson, 33, began indecently assaulting her and another girl at a house in Greenock.

Today, they speak about the lasting impact the horrific abuse, first revealed in yesterday’s Telegraph, has had on them.

A sheriff recently ruled that Williamson had carried out the abuse on various occasions between 1997 and 2002 and on one occasion between February 2004 and 2005 at his home in Lilybank Road.

But he will not be sent to jail as he was deemed unfit to stand trial, a decision that has today been slammed by both victims.

Shannon, 19, says she is sharing her story to warn others about the man who committed the sickening offences.

She said: “How do I feel towards him? Absolute disgust and hatred.

“He used to hold a fear over me and it’s had a massive impact on my life.

“My mental health has been seriously affected — I’ve been on anti-depressants from the age of 15, the strongest ones for my age.

“I’m on medication right now to help me get through this.” She poignantly referred to her younger self, adding: “I’ve had this wee girl with me this whole time. It’s time to let her go and say goodbye. Now I can move on with my life as an adult and get over this. I feel like I’ve finally got a voice.” Shannon gave evidence during a two-day ‘examination of facts hearing’ at Greenock Sheriff Court, telling how former taxi driver Williamson abused her in a bedroom while she played on a computer.

He told her that if she mentioned the abuse to anyone her grandad would die.

She only felt able to tell her mother about the traumatic experiences when she turned 16, leading to a police investigation.

Shannon is angry that Williamson never stood trial because he was not deemed mentally fit.

She said: “They say he is on the autistic spectrum.

“If he was autistic he wouldn’t have been able to have held a taxi licence or drive a car.

“He went to a mainstream school and knows right from wrong — he knew exactly what he was doing. I will learn to adapt and deal with it but the justice system is an absolute farce.

“I first made my statement when I was aged 16 back in May 2011 and look at the date now.

“He is utter scum and I want everyone to know what he did.” The other victim was aged between four and six when she was first abused by Williamson, who is also related to her. Now aged 21 and living in Greenock, she told the Telegraph of her ‘relief’ following the outcome of the court case.

She said: “My mum and others said they saw the relief on my face and could tell that something had been taken off my shoulders.

“I even felt that I slept so much better after giving my evidence.

“When the sheriff accepted the fact he did this, it felt like I could finally move on.

“It has been ongoing for four years so it’s been a long time coming.” When asked for her thoughts on the man who abused her as a little girl, she said: “I actually have no feelings towards him whatsoever.

“I used to be scared of him.

“I see him when I’m in town or when I go to the gym. I cancelled my gym membership but decided to renew it because I thought, ‘he’s took over enough of my life, he’s not going to stop me going places’.

“I’ve had a tremendous amount of support from witness support and my family — it’s been difficult for them as well.

“And I don’t know where I’d be without my partner, she’s been an absolute Godsend.” Williamson will be sentenced next month.
